First Selectman's Corner - July 3, 2019 - Summer Fun

Sunset at Brodie Beach

July 3, 2019

Summer months bring road construction and the implementation of our new budget.  As I write our DPW team is nearing completion of a big project on Johnnycake Lane and preparing an even larger job on Cedar Lane.  Anyone who lives in the western side of town or travels this way for work will tell you that Cedar has been a sore spot for several months.  Originally scheduled for repaving last fall, it was postponed until spring due to bad weather (there was so much rain last fall).

Now…with clear weather in sight – its full steam ahead and new paving will soon be applied on Cedar Lane between Niles Road and Marsh Road.   Once complete, we’ll head to West Road to complete another big job.   While we work to improve our roads, Torrington is working on the far end of West Hill Road (out to Route 183) and the State of Connecticut is paving Route 44 from Route 219 to the Saybrook Fish House (at a cost of $1.4 Million).  These two additional projects should make life better for our residents commuting in those directions.

Summer also brings recreational opportunities.  Our two town beaches: Brodie Beach and Stanclift Cove (shared with the Town of Barkhamsted) are in full swing.  For those that use our beaches, please be mindful that Brodie beach access passes are available for sale at both Town Hall and at the beach entrance (cash or personal check only).  Stanclift Cove only sells their beach passes at the beach entrance.   Both beaches will be open to the public through Labor Day with hours varying as the season progresses (and the days continue to get shorter).  We hope for many sunny days and great memories at the beach for all our residents!

For more fun at Brodie Park – the Summer Concert Series continues on Wednesday nights throughout the summer.  Tonight’s second concert of the season will bring local favorite “The Tradesmen” to the park....so get there early as I’m sure they’ll be a big crowd!  Or better yet…hit the beach during the day then walk up to the concert at 6:30 pm!

If you have a young family with children who are looking for some summer fun, “Camp Brodie” is now in Week 2 with six more weeks to go.  Guided by Christy Tellier, we’ve assembled a great team of local teens to keep our kids busy throughout the summer.  It’s a good opportunity to get the kids outside in a safe and fun atmosphere – so check it out!

There’s lots more fun to have in New Hartford throughout the summer with our DPW team busy maintaining South Brodie Park, Jones Mountain and the new Butler Riverfront Trail for excellent hiking and fishing opportunities.  For more information about Concerts, Camp Brodie or general summer recreation check out the newly updated town website under “recreation department” to download a copy of the summer Recreation Brochure.

I hope we all have a long, hot summer filled with lots of fun with family and friends!  New Hartford has many beautiful town parks and preserves to explore with your family that are some of the most beautiful Connecticut has to offer.  Enjoy – and I’ll see you all at the concert!
