Butler Farm Preservation & Riverfront Trail Project

Public Information Sessions

7:00 p.m. - Thursday, March 23 – South End Firehouse

9:30 a.m. – Saturday, March 25 – Town Hall, 3rd Floor

This proposed capital Project would preserve in perpetuity nearly 94 acres of agricultural and riverfront land located between the East and West Branches of the Farmington River off Black Bridge Road including:

1) 85.5 acres of the Michael Butler Farm with 59 acres of prime and important farmland soils; plus,

2) 8.1 acres with nearly a mile of frontage on the ‘Wild & Scenic’ Farmington River for a trail that would provide riverfront access for the public to hike and fish.

This project would ensure that the farm remains in agricultural use forever. The proposed purchase of the trail area by the Town is an opportunity to protect our critical Farmington River resource and to provide a recreational amenity for community residents and visitors to the village center. The farm preservation will be a state/local partnership through CT’s Community Farms Preservation Program.

The Town has received a Grant to cover roughly 55% of the cost of this preservation project; the remainder is to be funded by the Land Preservation Fund (this is not taxpayer dollars).  Come to the meeting and gather the facts needed to make an informed decision when it comes time to vote on the matter (date and method [town meeting or referendum] yet to be determined).
